Photographing Screens, Receipts and Documents Clearly

Not every useful photograph is beautiful. A clear picture of a document, a receipt or an error message can save hours of back-and-forth.

Documents flat, light even

  1. Lay the page flat on a plain, contrasting surface.
  2. Use soft, even light such as a window on an overcast day; avoid a single overhead lamp that throws your shadow across the page.
  3. Hold the camera directly above and parallel to the page, so the edges stay straight.
  4. Fill the frame with the document and check that every line is legible before you leave.

Glossy paper and plastic

Glare comes from a light source reflecting straight back into the lens. Tilt the document or move yourself until the bright patch slides off the text.

Photographing a screen

When you photograph a monitor or phone, the pattern of its pixels can interfere with the camera sensor's own pattern and produce a moiré pattern of ripples and bands. Changing the distance or angle slightly often removes it.

Better still, take a screenshot

If the information is on your own device, a screenshot is sharper and more faithful than any photograph of the screen, and it keeps the time and details exactly as they appeared. That is why support teams so often ask for one. A typical example, from a gaming platform and in Traditional Chinese, is a troubleshooting guide for a deposit that has not arrived, which asks users to keep a screenshot of the bank transfer record (存款未入帳的五步排查); the same habit helps with any bank, shop or courier dispute.
